William Faulkner and the French-Speaking World
Abstract
This article deals with the influence of William Faulkner on some French andFrancophone writers.I argue that French authors, such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and André Malraux, find in Faulkner’s fictional work resonance to their own philosophical ideas, namely the sense of the tragic and the metaphysics of time. Francophone writers, on the other hand, like KatebYacine, Edouard Glissant, RachidBoudjedra, among many others, are more attracted to Faulkner’s work for such issues as the vernacular language, the poetics of landscape, and the class and race issues.
